What guide and straightening roller bearings do

A guide or straightening roller is defined by the material it contacts and the geometry it must control. The groove is machined directly into the bearing outer ring, so groove profile, working diameter, edge radius, runout, surface condition and mounting must be specified together with the internal bearing. V-groove or U-groove?

V-groove: a single centred V groove in the outer ring. Specify groove angle, contact position, working diameter and edge transition.
U-groove: a U-shaped groove for wire, thread, cable or a round rail. The groove radius is matched to the wire or rail diameter — too tight pinches, too loose lets the wire wander. See 624UU and 625UU-type U-groove guide bearings.

Groove, runout and sealing on wire and cord lines

On steel cord and tire lines, the groove profile and radius decide how the cord is supported, radial runout of the groove produces a periodic tension change once per revolution, and rubber particles, steel fines and lubricant mist must stay out of the bearing. Identify a replacement by measurement

Trade designations for guide wheels are widely used but not standardised, so two parts sold under the same name can differ. Measure bore, outside diameter, width and groove radius, and check the shield or seal on the sample. We make U-groove and V-groove guide wheels to designation, sample or drawing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between V-groove and U-groove guide wheels?

A V-groove has a centred V profile defined by its angle; a U-groove has a radius matched to the wire, cord or round rail it carries.

Are 624UU guide wheels all the same?

No. The designation is widely used but not standardised. Confirm bore, outside diameter, width, groove radius and shields by measuring the sample.

Why does groove runout matter?

Radial runout of the groove changes the wire or cord tension once per revolution, which shows up as uneven tension or surface marks.

Can you make guide wheels to a drawing or sample?
