Custom bearing quotes take longer than standard ones — but most of the delay comes from missing information, not manufacturing. If you prepare the items on this checklist before you inquire, you'll get a real quote in days, not weeks of back-and-forth.
The 6 things we need to quote a custom bearing
1. A drawing or sample
This is non-negotiable for custom work. Ideally a dimensional drawing (PDF, DWG, or DXF) showing tolerances. If you don't have a drawing, a sample bearing we can reverse-engineer works too. Photos alone are not enough — we need to measure.
2. The operating environment
Tell us where the bearing runs:
- Speed (RPM) — radial and axial if both apply
- Load — radial, axial, or combined; static or dynamic
- Temperature range — especially if extreme
- Media — water, oil, dust, chemicals, food contact?
- Required life — hours or cycles between service
3. Quantity and annual demand
Custom tooling cost is amortized over volume. "One prototype" and "10,000 units per year" produce very different quotes. Be honest about your real demand — we won't oversell you, but we need the number to recommend the right manufacturing route.
4. Precision and tolerance requirements
If you don't specify, we'll quote standard ABEC-1 (P0). If you need P6, P5 or higher, tell us up front — tighter tolerances mean different grinding passes and different costs.
5. Material and heat treatment
Standard bearing steel (GCr15 / SAE 52100) covers 90% of applications. Stainless steel (AISI 440C, AISI 304) is needed for food, marine or chemical exposure. Special alloys (ceramic hybrid, through-hardened tool steel) are for high-temperature or extreme-load cases. If you don't know, tell us the application — we'll recommend.
6. Your timeline
When do you need samples? When do you need the first production batch? Custom bearings typically run 4-8 weeks for first article, plus production time. If you have a hard deadline, tell us — we'll tell you honestly whether we can hit it.
What you don't need to provide
- Target price — we'll quote based on the spec; you negotiate from there
- Brand name — we don't copy logos or claim brand authorization
- Packaging design — we'll recommend export-grade packing; you can customize later
What slows quotes down
The most common delay patterns we see:
- "I need a custom bearing" with no drawing, no dimensions, no application → 5+ rounds of email before we can even assess feasibility
- "Make me 100 of this" with a photo of a worn bearing → we can't reverse-engineer from a worn sample photo
- "Standard 6203 but cheaper" → there's no such thing; cheaper means different steel, different process, different life
